The Smart Road over Patna’s Mandiri Drain, set to complete by mid-August, integrates modern infrastructure with drainage solutions, aiming to ease traffic congestion and enhance safety through smart technology.

Patna, July 12, 2025 — In a major boost to urban infrastructure and smart mobility, the much-awaited Smart Road being constructed over the Mandiri Drain is likely to be completed by mid-August, according to officials from Patna Smart City Limited (PSCL).

The project is part of the broader Smart City Mission and is considered a model of modern urban planning — combining effective space utilization with technology-driven solutions for traffic and drainage management.

🏗️ Project Overview

The Smart Road is being built above the Mandiri Drain, which runs parallel to the busy Boring Road–Sri Krishna Puri corridor. This corridor is one of Patna’s most congested zones, often plagued by traffic jams and seasonal waterlogging.

To address both problems simultaneously, the PSCL decided to construct an elevated smart road using a deck-slab structure directly over the drain, transforming a previously underutilized and problematic area into a functional, tech-integrated roadway.

🚧 Construction and Features

  • Length & Location: The road runs for approximately 1.3 km, connecting vital points near Boring Road, Sri Krishna Puri, and Mandiri.
  • Structural Design: Elevated concrete deck slab built over the drain to support vehicular movement without obstructing drainage flow.
  • Smart Elements:
    • Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for real-time traffic updates and control.
    • Automated street lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures.
    • CCTV surveillance integrated with the city’s command and control center.
    • Smart signages and rainwater collection mechanisms.
  • Sustainable Approach: The design allows uninterrupted flow of stormwater, reducing flood risks during heavy rainfall.

📊 Current Progress and Timeline

  • As of July 2025, nearly 90% of civil construction is complete.
  • Work on electrical systems, camera installations, road surfacing, and painting is in the final stages.
  • According to PSCL, the road will be fully operational by August 15, barring weather-related delays.

“This road is not only about traffic movement; it’s about integrating smart technology to solve long-standing issues of drainage and congestion. It’s a multi-purpose corridor designed for the future,” said a PSCL official.

✅ Expected Benefits

  1. Traffic Decongestion: Offers an alternate route for commuters between Boring Road and Sri Krishna Puri, easing pressure on main arteries like Boring Canal Road.
  2. Monsoon Preparedness: Helps reduce waterlogging by allowing continuous flow in the Mandiri Drain.
  3. Enhanced Safety: CCTV and smart lights improve nighttime visibility and surveillance.
  4. Smart Infrastructure: Sets a precedent for using urban drains and nullahs for smart road development, maximizing space in dense city areas.
  5. Cleaner Aesthetics: Covers what was earlier an open, garbage-laden drain, improving the urban landscape.

🗣️ Public & Official Reactions

Residents of nearby areas have welcomed the initiative but urged the city to ensure timely completion and regular maintenance post-launch.

“We’ve suffered years of flooding and traffic bottlenecks. If this works, it’ll be a game-changer,” said Prabhat Kumar, a resident of Sri Krishna Puri.

City officials believe this project will be replicated in other parts of Patna, especially where drainage corridors intersect with major roads.
